SECTION 6 – Discourse analysis
Discourse analysis is the study of language in use, focusing on larger units of communication beyond the level of the sentence. It involves the analysis of spoken or written texts, conversations, and interactions, as well as the social and cultural context in which they occur.
In the teaching of English, discourse analysis is important because it provides insights into the communicative functions of language and helps learners to develop their communicative competence. It allows learners to understand how language is used to construct meaning, convey information, express opinions and attitudes, and perform social actions in different contexts.
Through discourse analysis, learners can learn about the different types of discourse, such as narratives, descriptions, explanations, and arguments, and the language features associated with each type. They can also learn about the organization of texts, including how ideas are linked together, how information is presented, and how paragraphs are structured.
Discourse analysis can also help learners to develop their language skills by exposing them to authentic language use in a variety of contexts. By analyzing and practicing different types of discourse, learners can improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as their overall communicative competence.
